The difference between a carved bowl and a turned bowl is enormous. Most obvious is the turned bowl is round unless it's warped. The carved bowl is elliptical. Carving allows most use of the flow of the grain to be the dominant feature.  It also utilizes natural imperfections. Its definitely harder work, but more gratifying. I think it's more beautiful.
